If you learned to fish, there's a good chance a bluegill was responsible. They're the fish that got us all hooked — aggressive, plentiful, and easy enough for a 7-year-old on a cane pole. But don't sleep on big 'gills — a 12-inch bull bluegill on 4 lb test will test your skills and fry up into one of the best meals you'll ever eat shore-side.
Shallow vegetated areas, dock edges, overhanging trees, weed beds. Found in nearly every body of warm water in North America. Spawning beds visible as circular depressions in sandy shallows.
Insects, worms, small jigs, flies. Aggressive for their size — they'll punch way above their weight class. On the full moons in summer, spawn beds are absolutely packed.
Spawn on full moons from late spring through summer (water 65–80°F). Multiple spawning events per season. Males aggressively guard nests — easy to sight-fish.
Pre-spawn aggressive bite. Moving to spawning flats.
Peak spawn activity. Full moons trigger mass spawning in shallow gravel/sand.
Moving slightly deeper. Still active and aggressive.
Schooled deep. Great ice fishing target.
Fish full moons in June and July — spawning beds concentrate fish in sight-fishable water.
Use ultralight tackle — 4 lb test and a tiny jig. The fight is more fun than bass fishing on heavy gear.
Did You Know
Bluegill hybridize with other sunfish species readily. A "hybrid" or "mean green" bluegill is a cross between bluegill and green sunfish — they grow faster and larger than pure bluegill.
Regulations Note
Most states have generous bag limits (25–50 fish per day). Great for introducing kids to fishing and harvesting for meals.
