Overview

Northern pike are ambush machines with a mouthful of razor teeth and zero hesitation. They'll eat anything — fish, frogs, ducks, and the occasional small mammal. Big pike give a freight-train hit followed by a run that will test your drag. They're one of the top ice fishing species in North America and a bucket-list fish for good reason.

Habitat

Shallow weedy bays, cabbage weed edges, reed beds, and points. In summer they move deeper but always return to weed structure. River pike hold in slower backwater pockets and eddies.

Feeding Behavior

Opportunistic apex predator. Ambushes prey from weed cover. Primary diet is fish but will eat frogs, mice, small waterfowl. Feeds most aggressively in cool water.

Spawning

Very early spawner — just after ice-out when water is 35–40°F. Spawn in flooded vegetation and marshes. First sport fish to be accessible in spring in northern states.

Pro Tips

01

Always use a wire leader. Pike will cut mono and fluoro instantly with their teeth.

02

The figure-8 boatside technique triggers more follows than actual strikes — keep doing it.

03

Set your drag looser than you think. Pike make explosive first runs.

Did You Know

Northern pike are one of the most widely distributed freshwater fish on Earth — found across North America, Europe, and Asia. The North American record (55 lbs) was caught in New York.

Regulations Note

Size and bag limits vary significantly. Catch-and-release highly encouraged for large females (over 32 inches). Check your state/province.
