Fishing Technique Guide
The foundational soft plastic technique. Cast to cover, let the rig sink to the bottom, then slowly drag it back with occasional hops. Mimics a crawfish or baitfish moving along the bottom.
When to use it
Effective nearly year-round but excels in spring when bass move shallow to spawn and in summer when fishing heavy cover. Slower drags dominate in cooler water; more aggressive hops work in warmer conditions.
Cast to the target — near structure, weeds, or cover.
Let the rig sink to the bottom on a semi-slack line. Watch for bites on the fall.
Once on bottom, point the rod tip down at about 7 o'clock.
Slowly drag the rod tip from 7 to 10 o'clock to move the bait 1–3 feet.
Drop the rod tip back to 7 and reel in the slack.
Occasionally give the rod a sharp hop (10 to 12 o'clock) then let it fall back down.
Set the hook on any tick, thump, or extra weight you feel — bass often pick it up silently.
Pro Tip
Most bites come on the drag, not the hop. Keep the retrieve slow — slower than you think is necessary.
