Freshwater Lure Guide
The punch rig is a heavy Texas rig — typically 1 to 2 oz — designed to punch through thick surface mats of vegetation: hydrilla, milfoil, lily pads, and floating grass. The heavy tungsten weight drives the bait through the canopy like a dart and drops it into the shaded, oxygenated water below where big largemouth live during summer. Use a heavy flipping stick, 50–65 lb braid, and a soft plastic chunk or creature bait. When you feel it fall through, let it sit for a beat, then pop it back up through the mat. This is a giant bass technique in the South and Midwest.
